Bloodborne: 10 Pro Tips to Master Yharnam and Hunt Every Nightmare

FromSoftware's Bloodborne is a masterpiece of gothic horror and punishing action, but it's also one of the most intimidating games to pick up. The streets of Yharnam are crawling with beasts, and the game famously offers very little hand-holding. Whether you're a brand-new hunter or just want to tighten up your playstyle, these ten pro tips will help you survive the night and put every monster to the blade.

1. Master the Gun Parry and Visceral Attacks

Bloodborne's combat isn't just about dodging and attacking. Your trusty firearm is actually a stagger tool. Fire a pistol shot just as an enemy's attack is about to land to parry them. When they drop to their knees, walk up and press R1 for a devastating Visceral Attack.

  • Practice on the brick-and-axe trolls in Central Yharnam.
  • Don't spam the trigger – time each shot carefully.

2. Embrace the Rally Mechanic

Unlike Dark Souls, Bloodborne rewards aggression. When you take damage, your health bar has a glowing orange segment. Attack enemies back within a few seconds to recover that lost HP. This Rally system encourages you to swing back rather than retreat.

  • Be offensive, but watch your stamina gauge.
  • Against mobs, a well-placed attack can fill your health quickly.

3. Dodge Toward Your Enemies, Not Away

Your first instinct is to roll backwards. In Bloodborne, that often gets you killed. Bosses like Cleric Beast and Father Gascoigne use wide horizontal swings and pursue you relentlessly. Use the quickstep (lock-on + dodge) to move toward and past enemies, ending up behind their attack arcs.

Aggressive positioning creates more punish windows and keeps you inside the sweet spot of your weapon's reach.

4. Pick the Saw Cleaver or Hunter Axe

Your starting weapon matters for the first several hours. The Saw Cleaver is the most versatile – its serrated form deals bonus damage to beast enemies (which are everywhere). The Hunter Axe is slower, but its charged spin attack melts crowds.

If you choose the Threaded Cane, know that it requires more finesse and upgrade investment early on.

5. Farm Blood Vials and Echoes Strategically

Running out of Blood Vials is a classic Bloodborne wall. Instead of grinding bosses repeatedly, spend some time farming echoes and vials. Central Yharnam is a great early farm: kill the brick trolls, the huntsmen, and the werewolves on the bridge.

After leveling up, buy extra vials with leftover echoes – they'll stockpile for later.

6. Level the Right Stats Without Spreading Thin

Pick a build and commit. Early on, focus on Vitality (more HP means fewer one-shots) and the primary offensive stat for your weapon (Strength for the Saw Cleaver/Hunter Axe, Skill for skill weapons).

Don't bother with Bloodtinge or Arcane on your first playthrough – they're specialized and weak until much later.

7. Repair and Upgrade Your Weapon at the Dream

Weapons in Bloodborne degrade with use. If you notice your damage plummeting, head to the Hunter's Dream and repair at the workbench. Also, spend your Blood Stone Shards to upgrade your weapon to +3 as soon as possible.

A +3 weapon makes Central Yharnam and Old Yharnam much less punishing.

8. Unlock Shortcuts and Explore Everything

Every level in Bloodborne is designed as a giant connected maze. Pull gates, open elevators, and kick down ladders to create shortcuts back to the lantern. This is how you save time and echoes.

Explore optional side areas like Old Yharnam for rare crafting materials and a powerful weapon. Don't just run through; secrets hide behind every corner.

9. Use Consumables Wisely

Molotov Cocktails absolutely destroy beast enemies and are great for boss openings. Antidote and Sedative keep you alive against poison; the Beast Blood Pellets can boost damage if you're confident.

Also, do not underestimate the Shining Coins – drop them to avoid getting lost in the dark Chalice Dungeons.

10. Learn Boss Patterns and Don't Fear Death

The biggest obstacle is your own frustration. Every boss has a readable moveset. Spend the first attempts just dodging and observing – figure out when to parry, when to quickstep, and when to attack.

Father Gascoigne is your first major test; use the gravestones to break his line of sight, and keep your distance in his beast phase.

With these ten tips in your hunter's toolkit, Yharnam's night is far more survivable. Stay aggressive, learn from every death, and remember: a hunter is never alone.
